Sailing

A salt breeze blowing through my open mouth
Calls in voices, strangely

Remembering the dreams,
the dreams we both dreamed
a red snake, white sands

Journeys and farewells
Years of not looking back

the bell that tolled
voices of regret

And in the breeze a sail

the wind rushes me, pushes me
against the iron rail on the sea wall.
I want to go but think instead

about the inn
the laughter is of people
who do not know each other
comfort from light and noise

and outside the window
a rope trailing in the current
tells me you are no longer moored here.

thank you for the songs you played
during the long nights. Thank you for the path you laid
Look at all the people walking here now
Wearing blindfolds

That before the first hesitant dawn, the first given promise,
The seduction of the first apple, the first lingering kiss
Before everything there is always nothing

Of empty waves
Echoes of the beginning
The dust of an old explosion

Of boiling rock
and a blue planet
where the oldest alchemy
a helix drawn in the mud
a thickening soup brings
creatures that crawl and creep
burrow and walk and wiggle
climb, run and leap
and even fly
until
at the first word of an upright ape
the universe opens its eyes
and weeps.

a roaring sea
a mountainous wave of rising and falling
chaos and churning plunging towards a distant shore
finally to surrender.

After the last of three denials, the last needless death
The last false word, the last rasping breath
After everything there is nothing

beneath the sea wall
two people once
an ice cream whose sweetness shared began me,
foam fleck at the edge of the ocean

Against an iron rail
I lean into the breeze
and feel the longing from a distant sail
set true across the changeless seas.

Phil J. Coates Creative began as one person's project, a space to publish poems, drawings, and ideas that didn't quite fit anywhere else. It's since grown into a small but evolving business.

With careful research, good writing, new authors, new ideas and discernment, we aim to be interesting, intelligent and truthful… a little out of the main current.
